The McMichael Canadian Art Collection: weddings, galas and gallery days by chauffeur
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is the art museum on a 40-hectare (100-acre) property in the village of Kleinburg, Vaughan, with a 7,900-square-metre main building, a sculpture garden, walking trails and the graves of six members of the Group of Seven. It hosts weddings, corporate events and galas and is the most-used wedding photography location in Vaughan. Chauffeured bookings are wedding-day movements between the church, the grounds and the hall, gala transportation from downtown hotels, and gallery days by the hour from across the GTA.
The McMichael is Vaughan's cultural landmark: the Group of Seven's paintings in a log-and-stone building above the Humber valley, the artists' cemetery among the pines, the trails and the sculpture garden, and a village on Islington Avenue at the gate with restaurants and galleries. For a chauffeured service it is three different bookings — the wedding, the gala and the visit — and each has its own logistics at the gallery's main gate off Islington Avenue. The McMichael's own site has the exhibitions, hours, event bookings and the grounds' photography arrangements; the Kleinburg community page has the village.
Getting there
The gallery is on Islington Avenue in Kleinburg, north of Major Mackenzie and south of Nashville Road, with its main entrance and drive off Islington. From Woodbridge it is ten minutes north on Islington; from Maple fifteen west on Major Mackenzie; from the VMC and the Highway 7 hotels twenty; from Thornhill twenty-five; from downtown Toronto forty-five via the 427 and Major Mackenzie; from Pearson thirty via the 427 extension. The Binder Twine Festival in September closes Islington through the village for the day.

Weddings and photographs
The McMichael hosts ceremonies and receptions on the grounds and in the building, and — far more often — hosts the photographs of weddings held elsewhere: a Woodbridge church at two, the McMichael grounds at three-thirty, a Concord hall at six is the classic Vaughan circuit. The wedding page describes the plan; the stretch brings the couple to the gate and the Sprinter the party, the chauffeurs know the arrival area and where the vehicles wait during the session, and the timeline allows for the drive to the hall — twenty minutes to the Jane Street halls, twelve to Chateau Le Jardin. The gallery's photography arrangements for wedding parties are on its site and should be booked with the gallery.
Galas and corporate events
The McMichael's galas and corporate dinners draw guests from downtown Toronto and the VMC towers, and the transportation is a coordinated booking: sedans and SUVs from the downtown hotels and the offices to the gate, a coordinator on our side for the arrivals, and the cars back at the agreed hour. Corporate accounts invoice it monthly; for a large event a Sprinter shuttle from a downtown hotel is the alternative to thirty cars.
Gallery days
A Sunday at the McMichael from Thornhill or downtown — the collection, the grounds, lunch in the village — is an hourly booking: the chauffeur drops at the gate, waits, and takes you to the village restaurants or home. Visitors landing at Pearson for a Toronto week with a Group of Seven day in it book the transfer from the hotel; the travel desk books the hotel. The trails and the sculpture garden are worth the extra hour in autumn.
Kleinburg village at the gate
The village's restaurants — the Doctor's House for the occasion, the Islington bistros for lunch — are five minutes from the gallery gate and are part of most bookings. The chauffeur meets at the restaurant door rather than circling the village's narrow streets on a summer Sunday. The Kleinburg Village site has the shops and the festival calendar.
Which vehicle
The stretch for the couple; the Sprinter for the wedding party or the gala shuttle; the Luxury SUV for a family gallery day; the Premium Sedan for the gala guest from the Four Seasons. The gallery's drive takes all of them; the chauffeur confirms the arrival area for the day.
Booking a McMichael trip
For a wedding, the contact page with the church, the photo session time and the hall. For a gala, the same with the guest list's origins. For a gallery day, the engine: "hourly", the start address, the hours, and "McMichael — main gate" in the notes.
The collection, briefly
The McMichael was founded by Robert and Signe McMichael, whose log-and-stone house on the hill above the Humber became the core of a gallery devoted to the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, their contemporaries and Indigenous and Inuit art, given to the province in 1965 and expanded since into the 7,900-square-metre building on a hundred acres of forest and trail. Six members of the Group — Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, A.J. Casson and Frank Johnston — are buried in the small cemetery among the pines, and Tom Thomson's shack, moved from Toronto, stands on the grounds. The sculpture garden, the trails down to the river and the views across the valley are as much the reason to visit as the galleries. The McMichael's site has the exhibitions, hours, admission and the event and photography arrangements.
A wedding's McMichael hour, as it runs
The couple leaves St. Peter's in Woodbridge at 15:10 in the stretch with the Sprinter of eight behind; Islington north through the village to the McMichael gate by 15:25; the chauffeurs park at the top of the drive where the gallery's staff direct wedding parties, and the photographer takes the party down the trail toward the cemetery's pines and the valley overlook for fifty minutes; the stretch is repositioned on the drive for the car photographs at 16:15; everyone is aboard by 16:25; Major Mackenzie east and Jane south to Bellvue Manor by 16:50 for the six o'clock entrance. The photography permit was arranged with the gallery weeks before; the chauffeurs confirmed the arrival area the day before; and the timeline's twenty-five-minute drive to the hall was the figure the wedding page uses.
A gala evening, as it runs
The McMichael's autumn gala draws two hundred guests from downtown, the VMC and the estates. The booking is thirty sedans and SUVs against a guest list — a Four Seasons pickup at 17:30, a Yorkville pickup at 17:40, a Concord head office at 18:00 — a Sprinter from the Ritz-Carlton for a corporate table, and a coordinator on our side at the gate from 18:15 watching the arrivals and holding the vehicles in the gallery's designated area. At 23:00 the cars are at the door in the order the coordinator calls them, and the guests are home without a valet ticket. On the sponsors' corporate accounts, the evening is one line each.
A gallery Sunday, as it runs
A Thornhill couple book an Executive Sedan by the hour from 11:00: Highway 7 west and Islington north to the gate by 11:30; the chauffeur drops at the building's entrance and waits at the top of the drive; two hours in the galleries and an hour on the trails; the Doctor's House for a late lunch at 14:45, the chauffeur at the restaurant door; the village's galleries for an hour; home by 17:30. Six and a half hours at the hourly rate, and a Sunday with nobody driving Islington behind the Sunday-drive traffic. A family from Pearson's hotels does the same day with a Luxury SUV and adds the Kortright Centre's trails on the way back.
Kleinburg's other draws, and the seasons
The village at the gate has the Doctor's House for weddings and dinners, the Islington restaurants and cafés, the galleries and the general store; the Kortright Centre on Pine Valley Drive is the conservation area with the maple-syrup festival in March and the trails; Copper Creek is the golf; the Binder Twine Festival on the Saturday after Labour Day closes Islington and fills the village. Autumn is the McMichael's season — the trails in colour, the galleries' big exhibition — and the busiest for chauffeured Sundays; December brings the village's lights and the gallery's holiday programme. The Kleinburg community page has the streets and the estates; the Kleinburg Village site has the calendar.
Photography permits, and the timing
Wedding photography on the McMichael grounds is arranged with the gallery in advance and has a fee and a time slot; the gallery's site has the details, and the slot is the number the chauffeurs plan around. A one-hour slot at three means the stretch at the gate by 14:50, the party on the trail by 15:00, the car photographs on the drive at 15:45 and everyone aboard by 16:00 for the hall. The chauffeurs have done this enough to know that the walk to the cemetery's pines takes ten minutes each way in wedding shoes, and the timeline allows it.
Corporate events at the gallery
The McMichael hosts corporate dinners, product launches and retreats in its galleries and on its grounds, and the transportation is a corporate account booking: Sprinters from the VMC towers or the Highway 7 hotels, sedans for the executives from Pearson, and a coordinator on our side for the arrivals and the departures. The gallery's event team handles the building; the chauffeurs handle the drive and the gate, and the two have usually worked the same event before.
Getting there from downtown hotels
A visitor at a downtown hotel books the McMichael as an hourly day: the 427 north to Major Mackenzie and Islington in forty-five minutes, the gallery, the village, and the return via Highway 7 and the 400 to see a different part of the city. The downtown route page covers the hotels' pickup arrangements; the Kleinburg community page covers the village.
The details
Islington Avenue through Kleinburg is two lanes and slow behind the Sunday-drive traffic and the gallery's own weekend visitors; the chauffeur allows for it. The gallery's drive from the gate to the building is long and tree-lined — the photographs are often taken on it — and the vehicles wait at the top rather than blocking it. Major Mackenzie's construction between Highway 27 and Weston is the approach from the east and adds ten minutes on a weekday. And the pines at the artists' cemetery are the McMichael's most-photographed corner; the chauffeur knows the path.
McMichael in Kleinburg: questions answered
Can a stretch limousine get to the McMichael for wedding photographs?
Yes — the main gate and drive off Islington Avenue take a stretch and a Sprinter; the chauffeur confirms the arrival area and where the vehicles wait during the session. Photography on the grounds is arranged with the gallery.
How long is the McMichael to the Vaughan banquet halls?
About twenty minutes to the Jane Street halls in Concord and twelve to Chateau Le Jardin in Woodbridge on a Saturday; the wedding timeline allows for it.
Do you run transportation for McMichael galas?
Yes — sedans and SUVs from downtown hotels and the VMC towers with a coordinator on our side, or a Sprinter shuttle from a downtown hotel.
Can I book a gallery day from downtown Toronto?
Yes — an hourly booking: forty-five minutes each way via the 427 and Major Mackenzie, the gallery, the grounds and lunch in Kleinburg village.
Is there parking at the McMichael for a chauffeured vehicle?
The gallery directs vehicles to its lot and, for wedding parties, an arrival area at the top of the drive; the chauffeur confirms the day's arrangement.
How long does a gallery visit take?
Two hours for the galleries and an hour for the trails is the usual; the chauffeur waits at the top of the drive on an hourly booking.
Is the McMichael accessible for an elderly guest?
The building and the main paths are; the trail to the artists' cemetery is a slope. The Luxury SUV's door height suits an older guest, and the chauffeur drops at the building's entrance and waits at the top of the drive.
Can we stop at the Kortright Centre on the same day?
Yes — it is five minutes south on Pine Valley Drive and an hourly booking strings the McMichael, Kortright's trails and lunch in the village without moving the car yourself.
