Vaughan to Buffalo Airport: the cross-border run for the cheaper US fare
Vaughan to Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 170 kilometres and two to two and a half hours via the QEW to the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie or the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge, the US border crossing, and Interstate 190 to the airport in Cheektowaga — plus the border wait, which the chauffeur plans around. It is booked when the US-departure fare to Florida, the Caribbean or the western US is hundreds of dollars a seat cheaper than Pearson's. Passports for every passenger; the chauffeur's vehicle is documented for the crossing.
The reason Vaughan families drive to Buffalo is arithmetic: a family of four to Orlando or Fort Lauderdale from Buffalo on a US carrier can be a thousand dollars less than from Pearson, and Buffalo's parking is a fraction of Pearson's. The reason they book a chauffeur is the other arithmetic: two and a half hours each way, a border, an early flight, and a car that would otherwise sit in a Cheektowaga lot for a week. A Luxury SUV from a Woodbridge door to the Buffalo departures kerb is a fixed fare from the engine, the return is a second one timed to the flight, and the border is the chauffeur's problem.
The drive and the bridges
From Vaughan the QEW to the Niagara Peninsula as for the Niagara route, then one of two crossings. The Peace Bridge at Fort Erie is the direct one — QEW to the end, over the Niagara River into Buffalo, I-190 north to the airport exit — and the usual choice. The Lewiston–Queenston Bridge, from Highway 405 off the QEW at St. Catharines, is the alternative when the Peace Bridge's wait is long, and lands on I-190 south of Niagara Falls, New York. The chauffeur checks both crossings' wait times before leaving Vaughan on the CBP border wait times page and picks. Two hours from Woodbridge to the bridge; twenty to forty minutes for the crossing on a normal day; twenty minutes from the bridge to the airport.
| From | To the Peace Bridge | Crossing (typical) | Bridge to BUF | Total plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woodbridge / Kleinburg | 100–110 min | 20–40 | 20 | 2h 20 – 2h 50 |
| VMC / Concord | 105–115 | 20–40 | 20 | 2h 25 – 2h 55 |
| Maple / Thornhill | 110–120 | 20–40 | 20 | 2h 30 – 3h |

The border
Everyone in the vehicle needs a valid passport, or a NEXUS card, or for children a birth certificate is not enough for air travel — a passport. Children travelling without both parents should carry a consent letter. The chauffeur carries the vehicle's registration, insurance and the commercial documentation the crossing requires; you carry nothing but your own papers and your honesty about what is in the bags. The chauffeur pulls into the booth, hands over the passengers' documents together, answers the officer's questions about the trip, and — on the return — the CBSA declaration is yours. NEXUS lanes are used only when every passenger holds a card. Waits are worst on Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons, US holiday weekends and the day before Canadian ones; the chauffeur's plan uses the day's actual wait plus a margin, and for an early flight that can mean a 3 a.m. pickup.
At Buffalo Airport
Buffalo Niagara is a single-terminal airport with a departures kerb the chauffeur drops at and an arrivals kerb for the return pickup; the airport's site lists the airlines. Security is quick by Pearson standards — an hour before a domestic US departure is the airport's guidance, and ninety minutes is the chauffeur's plan. For the return, the chauffeur tracks the flight, waits at the arrivals kerb, and the border on the way home is the CBSA declaration and, usually, a shorter wait northbound.
Why not fly from Pearson
Sometimes you should. The Buffalo saving disappears if the flight is a US-carrier connection through an East Coast hub that Air Canada or WestJet fly direct from Pearson, and the two-and-a-half hours each way plus the border is a real cost. Buffalo wins for direct US-carrier flights to Florida, the Caribbean via Fort Lauderdale or Charlotte, Las Vegas, the western US and the discount carriers' routes. Compare the fares through the travel desk, add the chauffeur to each airport, and the answer is usually clear.
Other cross-border trips from Vaughan
The same plan covers Buffalo for the Bills and the Sabres, the Walden Galleria and the outlets at Niagara Falls, New York, a Lewiston dinner, and — as long-distance one-ways — Rochester, Erie, Cleveland, Detroit for a Lions game or DTW, and New York City or Boston for anyone who would rather sleep in the back seat than change planes. Each is priced by the engine from the addresses, and the black car page explains the long-distance logic.
Which vehicle
The Luxury SUV for the family and the luggage. The Executive Sedan for a couple. The Sprinter for a group — a Bills game for twelve is a common one. Not the stretch across a border.
Booking Vaughan to Buffalo Airport
Address, the flight number and date, passengers and luggage, and "all passengers hold passports" in the notes. The engine prices the one-way to BUF; book the return with the arriving flight. The chauffeur calls the day before to confirm the crossing plan.
A Buffalo departure, as it runs
A Woodbridge family of four on a 07:15 JetBlue to Fort Lauderdale: the confirmation sets the pickup at 03:30, the Luxury SUV is at the Islington Woods address at 03:28 with two car seats installed, the 427 to the QEW is empty, the Skyway at 04:05, Fort Erie at 05:00; the Peace Bridge shows a fifteen-minute wait on the CBP site the chauffeur checked at 03:00, the booth at 05:15, the family's passports handed over together, the questions answered, I-190 north at 05:25, and the Buffalo departures kerb at 05:45 — ninety minutes before a domestic US flight with checked bags, exactly the plan. The chauffeur is back in Vaughan by 08:30. A week later the return lands at 22:40, the SUV is at the arrivals kerb with the seats still installed, the northbound Peace Bridge wait is ten minutes at 23:30, the CBSA declaration is the family's, and Woodbridge is reached at 01:15.
The border, for the first-time crosser
A land border crossing by car is a booth, an officer and a few questions: where are you going, for how long, what are you bringing, are you all citizens. The chauffeur hands over the passports together, answers for the vehicle and the trip, and the passengers answer for themselves; the whole exchange is a minute or two. NEXUS lanes are quicker but usable only if every occupant holds a card. Northbound, the CBSA booth asks the same and the declaration of purchases is yours; the duty-free allowance depends on how long you were away. Children need passports for air travel regardless of the land crossing, and a child travelling without both parents should carry a signed consent letter with the absent parent's contact details, which officers on both sides may ask to see. The chauffeur carries the vehicle's registration, insurance and commercial documentation, and has crossed hundreds of times; the passengers need only their papers and a plain answer.
Buffalo Niagara International, for the first-timer
The airport is in Cheektowaga, ten minutes east of downtown Buffalo off I-190 and the Kensington Expressway, a single terminal with two concourses, a departures kerb on the upper level and an arrivals kerb below, a short security line by Pearson standards, and a schedule dominated by the US carriers' domestic routes — Florida, the Carolinas, Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas, the East Coast hubs — and the discount carriers. The airport's site lists the airlines and the current guidance on arrival times. There is a cell-phone lot where the chauffeur waits for a return, and the arrivals kerb has a short-stay lane for the pickup itself.
Other US trips from Vaughan, with the same plan
Buffalo for a Bills game at the stadium in Orchard Park or a Sabres game downtown — a Sprinter for twelve by the hour, the border both ways, the tailgate not our department. The Walden Galleria and the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA for a shopping day. Lewiston for dinner and Niagara Falls, New York, for the state park. Rochester and Erie as long-distance one-ways. Detroit for DTW's flights or a Lions game, four hours via the 401 and the Ambassador Bridge or the tunnel. And the long ones — New York City, Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland — as one-way transfers for the passenger who would rather sleep in the back seat than connect through a hub. Each is priced from the addresses by the engine, and each carries the border into the plan.
When to fly from Pearson instead, honestly
If the flight from Buffalo is a US-carrier connection through Charlotte or Atlanta and Air Canada or WestJet fly the route direct from Pearson, the Buffalo saving is usually eaten by the connection's hours and the two-and-a-half-hour drive each way. If the traveller is one person with a carry-on, Pearson's thirty minutes from Vaughan wins on time even at a higher fare. If the family is five with luggage on a direct discount flight to Florida, Buffalo wins by hundreds of dollars a seat and the SUV to the border is the sensible way to collect them. The travel desk shows both airports' fares; the engine shows both chauffeur fares; the arithmetic takes a minute.
Buffalo for Vaughan's US-carrier loyalists
Some Vaughan travellers fly from Buffalo for reasons other than the fare: a US airline's loyalty status, a direct route Pearson does not have, a preference for a small airport. For them the run is routine — the same SUV, the same bridge, the same plan — and it is often booked on a corporate account with the crossing documents on file. The Pearson route remains the default for everyone else, and the honest arithmetic on this page is the reason.
Timing the return crossing
Northbound waits at the Peace Bridge are worst on Sunday afternoons and US holiday Mondays; a return flight landing at 22:40 crosses at 23:30 with little wait, and a flight landing at 15:00 on a Sunday may sit for forty minutes at Fort Erie. The chauffeur checks the CBSA wait times and, when Lewiston–Queenston is shorter, takes the 190 north and the 405 instead.

The details
The Peace Bridge's US plaza separates trucks from cars; the chauffeur knows the split. Buffalo's cell-phone lot is where the chauffeur waits for the return. The bridge toll is inside the fare. And a stop at the duty-free before the crossing is a matter of asking.
Buffalo Airport (BUF): questions answered
How long is Vaughan to Buffalo Airport?
Two to two and a half hours by road via the QEW and the Peace Bridge or Lewiston–Queenston, plus the border wait — the plan is usually 2h 20 to 3h. The chauffeur checks both crossings before leaving.
What documents do I need?
A valid passport or NEXUS card for every passenger; a consent letter for a child travelling without both parents. The chauffeur carries the vehicle's crossing documents.
Is Buffalo really cheaper than Pearson?
Often, for direct US-carrier flights to Florida, the Caribbean via US hubs, Las Vegas and the western US — sometimes by hundreds of dollars a seat. Not for routes Air Canada or WestJet fly direct from Pearson. Compare through the travel desk.
Do you do Bills games and the outlets?
Yes — the same cross-border plan, as an hourly booking or two one-ways.
Is the bridge toll included?
Yes — inside the fixed fare.
Can the chauffeur stop at the duty-free?
Yes — the duty-free is on the Canadian side before the Peace Bridge; ask and the chauffeur stops.
Do you drive into Buffalo for a hospital or a university?
Yes — Roswell Park, the University at Buffalo and the Buffalo hospitals are common one-ways from Vaughan, with the same border plan and the same fixed fare from the addresses.
