Buffalo, the near one
Buffalo is about 174 km from Vaughan — two and a quarter hours by the routing estimate via the QEW and the Peace Bridge, and a little more with the border. Vaughan families book it as a chauffeured day: wings at Anchor Bar or Duff's, Canalside and the Naval Park, a Sabres or Bisons game, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and home by evening; or as the pickup and drop for a cheap flight out of Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
Buffalo is the American city Vaughan can reach in the time it takes to cross Toronto on a bad day, and Vaughan families use it three ways: the afternoon — wings, the waterfront and a game; the airport — the low-fare flights from Buffalo Niagara that Pearson does not match, with a chauffeured drop at the terminal and a pickup at the return; and the gateway — every I-90 trip on this site, from Erie to New York, passes through it. It is a city of grain elevators and Art Deco — City Hall's tower, the Guaranty Building, Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin Martin House — of a waterfront rebuilt at Canalside, of the Sabres and the Bills, and of a food argument about the wings that a chauffeur settles by taking the family to both. The Visit Buffalo Niagara site has the city; the border guide has the Peace Bridge, which is this trip's front door.

The road and the bridge
From Woodbridge the 407 to the QEW, Burlington's Skyway, St. Catharines, and the QEW's last miles to Fort Erie and the Peace Bridge's plaza — ninety minutes to the booth in normal traffic, and the booth is the variable: ten minutes on a Tuesday, forty on a Saturday morning, with the CBP wait times checked by the chauffeur at departure and the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge as the alternative when the Peace Bridge is slow. Across the bridge, I-190 puts the SUV in downtown Buffalo in ten minutes; the routing estimate's two and a quarter hours is right without the border, and two and a half to three is the practical figure.
The wings
The Anchor Bar on Main Street claims the invention in 1964 and serves them in the room where it happened; Duff's on Sheridan Drive in Amherst claims the better wing and the hotter sauce; Bar-Bill Tavern in East Aurora is the connoisseurs' third; and a Vaughan family's afternoon does Anchor Bar for the story and Duff's for the argument, with the chauffeur driving between and nobody counting the sauce on their fingers. Beef on weck — roast beef on a salt-and-caraway roll — is the city's other sandwich and Schwabl's in West Seneca is where it is done properly.
Canalside, the Naval Park and the Sabres
Canalside is the rebuilt harbour at the Erie Canal's western end — the boardwalk, the paddle boats and the ice rink in winter where the canal's slip was, the Explore & More children's museum, the food stands — and the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park beside it has a destroyer, a cruiser and a submarine to walk through, the children's hour. KeyBank Center across the street is the Sabres' arena, and a Vaughan hockey family does a Sabres–Leafs game as the classic evening: the Sprinter from Vaughan at three, Canalside at five, the game at seven, home by midnight with the Peace Bridge at eleven when it is empty. The Bisons' Sahlen Field, the Blue Jays' Triple-A club, is two blocks away for a summer afternoon.
The art and the architecture
The Buffalo AKG Art Museum — the Albright-Knox, reopened in 2023 with its new glass wing — is one of the country's great modern collections, from Picasso and Pollock to the present, on Elmwood Avenue by Delaware Park; the museum's site has the hours. Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin House on Jewett Parkway, restored over twenty years, is the Prairie style's masterpiece in the East and a ninety-minute tour; downtown, Louis Sullivan's Guaranty Building, the Art Deco City Hall with its observation deck and the Ellicott Square Building are the walking hour; Elmwood Village's shops and cafés are the afternoon between.
The airport version
Buffalo Niagara International Airport, twenty minutes east of downtown in Cheektowaga, is where Vaughan families catch the low-fare flights to Florida, Las Vegas and the American cities that Pearson prices higher, and the chauffeured version is the SUV from the Vaughan driveway to the terminal's door — two and a half hours with the bridge, the bags in the back and no Buffalo parking — and the pickup at the return with the chauffeur watching the flight. It is the airport transfer logic applied to the other airport, and the site prices it as a one-way each direction.
The day, in shape
From Vaughan at 9:30: the Peace Bridge at 11, Canalside and the Naval Park's ships at 11:30, Anchor Bar at 1, the Buffalo AKG at 2:30, Elmwood Village's coffee at 4, Duff's at 5:30 for the comparison, the Peace Bridge's Canadian booth at 7 with the CBSA question — under 24 hours, nothing duty-free, the wings do not count — and Vaughan by 8:30. Eleven hours, the Luxury SUV or Sprinter on daily hire, one number in the booking engine.
What the chauffeur replaces
The Peace Bridge's queue as a driver rather than a passenger; the QEW back at night after a game and a beer; the downtown garages on a Sabres night; and the airport's parking for a week, which for a family flying from Buffalo is the cost that the chauffeured drop removes. For a couple the day is a treat; for a family of five or a group of six for a game it is the plain arithmetic of one fare.
Seasons
Hockey season for the Sabres and the Leafs' visits; summer for Canalside, the Bisons and the Naval Park; September for the Bills and the game-day post; December for Canalside's rink and the Buffalo lights; the Elmwood Festival of the Arts in late August. Buffalo's snow is the winter's variable and the chauffeur watches the lake-effect forecast.
Pairing it
Buffalo pairs with the Bills, the Walden Galleria and the American falls as the near cluster, with Letchworth and Ellicottville as the day trips beyond, and with every I-90 destination on this site as the first hour of the road.
The Sabres night, in order
Six friends from Maple for a Sabres–Leafs game: the Sprinter at 3 p.m., the QEW, the Peace Bridge at 4:40 with a ten-minute wait, Anchor Bar at 5:10 for the wings and the story, KeyBank Center's doors at 6:30 with the Sprinter in the Canalside garage, the game at 7, the lot at 9:45, the Peace Bridge's Canadian booth at 10:30 with the caps declared, and Maple by midnight. Nine hours of daily hire split six ways against six cars' worth of the QEW at night, and the Sabres' site has the schedule.
Delaware Park and the Zoo
Frederick Law Olmsted's Delaware Park — the meadow, the lake and the rose garden — is the Buffalo AKG's neighbour and the Buffalo Zoo is at its northern edge, the country's third-oldest with its polar bears and its rainforest; a family with young children does the zoo in the morning and the museum's family programme in the afternoon, with the SUV parked once on Elmwood Avenue and the park walked between. The zoo's site has the hours.
The Martin House and the architecture morning
Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin House complex — the main house, the pergola, the conservatory and the carriage house, restored to 1907 and opened with a visitor pavilion by Toshiko Mori — is a ninety-minute guided tour that an architecture teenager from Vaughan does as the day's first stop at ten; the Guaranty Building's lobby downtown and City Hall's twenty-eighth-floor observation deck, free on weekdays, are the eleven o'clock, and the Martin House's site has the tour times. Wright's Graycliff estate on the lake at Derby is the second tour for a family that wants both.
The grain elevators and Silo City
Buffalo's waterfront south of Canalside is the largest collection of standing grain elevators in the world — the concrete cylinders that fed the Erie Canal's trade — and Silo City on Childs Street opens them for tours, concerts and the kayak paddles up the Buffalo River between them; the Buffalo RiverWorks complex beside them has a rink, a climbing wall on a silo and a brewery, and the Outer Harbor's Wilkeson Pointe is the lakefront walk. A Vaughan family with teenagers does the kayak hour and the RiverWorks lunch as the afternoon's alternative to the art museum; the Explore Buffalo tours cover the elevators and the architecture on foot.
The Broadway Market and the Polish East Side
The Broadway Market on the East Side is the 1888 public market that fills before Easter with the Polish community's butter lambs, pierogi and pączki — a Vaughan family's Saturday morning in Lent, with the Corpus Christi and St. Stanislaus churches' towers around it — and the East Side's Polish bakeries and delis are the food run that the Wegmans post does not cover. The market's site has the Easter hours and the Sprinter's cooler carries the pierogi home within the CBSA's food rules.
The one-hour version
A Vaughan couple with a Buffalo flight in the evening does the city in an hour on the way: the SUV from the driveway at two, the Peace Bridge at 3:40, Anchor Bar's wings at four, Canalside's boardwalk at five, the airport's terminal at six for an eight o'clock flight — the one-way with the airport as the last stop, and the booking engine pricing the extra hour as part of the transfer rather than a separate day.
The airport pickup, in detail
A family returning to Buffalo Niagara International from a Florida week lands at 9 p.m., and the chauffeur has watched the flight from the afternoon: the SUV at the arrivals kerb as the bags come off, the Peace Bridge at 10:15 with the CBSA question about the week's purchases and the 48-hour exemption applied, and the Vaughan driveway by midnight — the airport-transfer standard applied to the other airport, with the flight-tracking, the wait time and the child seats inside the fare. A family that parked at the airport for a week pays the lot and drives the QEW at midnight; the chauffeured version is the fare and the sleep.
Booking it
Book from your Vaughan address as a return, a daily hire or an airport one-way; tell us the game, the airport's flight, the seats and every passenger's citizenship for the bridge, and the chauffeur confirms the plan the evening before with the Peace Bridge's wait on it.
